Back in Mr. Richards’s room, the chaos I’d predicted was in full flight. Quibbles had leaped onto the vanity table. The table, not being constructed with the weight of a Maine Coon in mind, had collapsed, spilling the remnants of the dead man’s meal all over the floor. Quibbles picked his way through the debris, taking a cautious sniff at the mess.

Angel, unperturbed, perched on the side of the bed and sifted through the contents of a briefcase.

My mood shifted from annoyed to nuclear. “Look what you’ve done to the crime scene,” I shouted. “And put those papers down.”

My cousin cast me an insouciant smile. “Technically, I’m not responsible for the mess. Your cat is out of control. The good news is, he tried the soup, and he’s still alive. So I think we can rule out my bad cooking as the cause of death.”

I hauled oxygen into my lungs and pulled my nails out of my palms. Count to ten, Maggie. Finally, Lenny, recognizing the signs of my imminent meltdown, intervened.

“Whatcha got there?” He removed a manila folder from the briefcase and opened it. “Whoa. Maggie, you gotta check this out.”

Glaring at my cousin, I snatched the folder she was holding.

“Hey,” she protested. “That’s not polite.”

“I’m past caring.” I flipped open the folder, skimmed the first page, and my heart missed a beat. “Oh, wow. Is this what you meant, Lenny? Do you have a contestant file, too?”

“Yeah. I have Honey’s. Whose do you have?”

“Mildred’s.”

“I’d just finished leafing through Trevor’s file when you two barged in, and Maggie started yelling.” Angel looked at me through narrowed eyes. “Seeing as your sidekick is friendlier than you are, he can have first dibs at what else I found lurking in Mr. Richards’s briefcase.”

“Hey, I’m no sidekick,” Lenny said, winking at me. “As of four weeks ago, I’m a bona fide partner in Movie Reel Investigations.”

“Okay, Mr. P.I. Then take a gander at this.” Angel reached into the briefcase and removed a wallet with a flourish.

Lenny took the wallet and flipped through its contents. His eyebrows formed twin bushy arcs. “It seems our latest corpse checked in under an assumed name. According to his bank cards, driver’s license, and business card, he was Neil Boland, a university lecturer in zoology.”

I tossed the file I was holding back into the briefcase and read the business card. “Why does a professor of zoology check into a remote hotel on his own, using a pseudonym? We can rule out a romantic tryst. Angel wasn’t expecting any other guests, and no one in their right mind would pick this place for a rendezvous.”

“I should be offended,” my cousin said, “but you’re right. We don’t get dirty weekenders. Not even pervs want to hang out here.”

“And,” I continued, warming to my theme, “why did a guy with an alleged cat phobia have information on all the final-round contestants in the Great Irish Purr Off?”

Quibbles, bored with the room now that there was nothing else for him to destroy, pawed at the door, meowing to get out.
